The book. I bought it 50 years ago. I think they have dramatized the movie and added a cast of beautiful people to make it more appealing. In the early southern American colonies the French employed many black servants.

I thought at first that Joscelyn must be a very young Colin Firth but then I discovered in the titles afterwards that it was his younger brother Jonathan who is also an actor. They look so alike! The problem I have with Derek Jacobi is that, for me, he will be eternally the Emperor Claudius.

The woman who played Aunt Reed, did a fantastic job. She showed the battle for her soul, which it seems unfortunately that she lost. She knew right from wrong, but in the end she sided with pride at the very last minute, she sided with pride and that’s a pity.

Read the actual novel. This is a very good screenplay, but it's totally different from the novel. The main characters' names are changed in many cases. Eleanor was Eluned, and had no sister; Edmund was Ninian, and pretended to be the nephew of Ailnoth's housekeeper, who isn't even in this version. Mary's name was Sanan. Eluned did commit suicide, but was found downstream by others who assumed she'd drowned by accident and gave her Christian burial. Most importantly, Ailnoth was not murdered. He assaulted someone with his staff - funny, someone objected to the staff and it is in the novel as a key plot element. This was at the mill pond; he lost his footing, fell, struck his head, rolled into the water and drowned. Which was witnessed by Father Adam's verger, who had come to the pond to mourn Eluned and pray for her. Not because he was her lover, but because he was a kind man who loved the children and waifs of the Foregate. He saw Ailnoth drown and did nothing, because he believed it was the vengeance of God on a cruel man. VERY different story. Would have made a very good episode, especially because there was none of the gore, no torturing, no manhunts. But it is complex, and we like our stories simple now. It's a good screenplay, but the novel is incredibly different from this.
